In-Person / Un-plugged version of the activity walk-through modeled for you - How would you do this activity in-person?

Activity Overview

Students create their own decision trees that can be used to classify various types of pasta. This activity introduces the concepts of a decision tree, classification, and bias.

Total Activity Time: 25 minutes

Materials (in person):

  • Chart paper & markers for students to create worksheets
  • 8 pieces of unique types of pasta for each student

Prep:

  • Organize pasta or other materials for easy student access

Options for Differentiation

  • Use six pieces of pasta instead of eight.
  • Assign heterogeneous ability partners for “PastaLand” activities
  • Pull aside a student or a small group of students who benefit from having directions read aloud. Read the directions aloud for these students and walk them through the activity as needed. Aim for maximal independence and minimal frustration.
  • Remind students that, if they finish early, they can continue to work on their “Explore AI Journal”, which students can work on as an ongoing project.
