Unit Overview
This second unit introduces middle school students to supervised machine learning: what it is and how to train them, like neural networks. They learn foundational concepts relevant to neural networks (ie., feedforward, evaluation, backpropagation) and generative AI (ie., classification and discrimination vs. generation) through hands-on participatory simulations.
Essential Questions:
- How do machines learn?
- What are neural networks?
- What's the difference between classifying AI and generating AI?
- What STEM jobs might be available to students?
Lessons:
- Lesson 1.1: Supervised Machine Learning
- Lesson 1.2: Neural Networks
- Lesson 1.3: Classifying AI vs. Generating AI
- Lesson 1.4: Inventory of Me
- Lesson 1.5: Planting the Seed of STEM Jobs
