Lesson Overview
This lesson introduces students to what AI is and what it is not. They will learn about three basic components of most types of AI.
Total Lesson Time: 45 min
Learning Objectives: Students will be able to…
- Identify the 3 basic components of most types of AI.
- Identify everyday technologies that use AI.
- Distinguish between technologies that use AI and do not use AI.
Vocabulary Introduced: dataset, learning algorithm, prediction, curate, classify
Pacing:
- Opening (5 min)
- Intro to new material, terms, guided practice (15 min)

Planning Guide
Preparation Needed: 15-20 min
Materials:
- Printed Activity Worksheet and Exit Ticket
- Cutout pictures of AI tools
- (optional) Glue sticks
Prep Needed for Teaching In-Person:
- Print the “AI or Not AI?” activity worksheets and Exit Ticket (one for each student)
- Cut 15 roughly 2"x2" pictures of AI tools for sorting.
- (optional) Glue sticks for pasting sorted pictures into place on the printed worksheet.
- (optional) Give online access to “Explore AI Journal” (individual access)
