Unit Overview
This first unit introduces middle school students to artificial intelligence (AI). They learn that most types of AI comprise three parts: a dataset, a learning algorithm, and a prediction. Through simulations, exploration, and discussion students learn how AI can biased (such as algorithmic bias), and how bias can lead to prioritizing the values of some stakeholders over others.
Essential Questions:
- What is AI?
- What is bias in AI?
- How might AI be re-designed to minimize bias?
Lessons:
- Lesson 0.1 What is AI?
- Lesson 0.2 Algorithms as Opinions
- Lesson 0.3 Ethical Matrix
- Lesson 0.4 Decision Trees
- Lesson 0.5 Investigating Bias
- Lesson 0.6 Career Daydream
