AI or Not? Activity

Activity Overview

A hands-on version of the AI or Not? sorting activity in which students sort pictures of contemporary technology into two groups: technology with AI and technology without AI. The activity is designed to get students thinking about the three parts of machine learning (dataset, learning algorithm, prediction) as a tool for determining whether the technology in their everyday life uses AI or not.

Total Activity Time: 15 minutes

Materials:

  • Student worksheet: printable version
  • Teacher answer key
  • (optional) Glue sticks

Prep:

  • Print activity worksheets (one per student)
  • Cutout pictures of AI tools
  • (optional) Make glue sticks available

Options for Differentiation

  • Make the activity more kinesthetic as a whole class group activity
  • Assign partners or small heterogeneous ability groups of 3-4 for “AI or Not AI?” activity
  • Assign (as appropriate) Worksheet Version 2, which has fewer pictures to classify.
  • Assign (as appropriate) only the first 6 - 10 technologies in the Student Worksheet
  • Introduce the extended activities “Explore AI Journal”, which students can work on as an ongoing project once they have completed material for this or any other lesson.
