Overview

In this extension activity, students create an Escape Room (like a student-made quiz) using information that they learned about the processing of training a neural network from the Neural Network activity from the DAILy curriculum.

Through this activity, teachers should encourage students to connect neural networks to their own lives, through analogies or connections to where and how neural networks might appear in their own lives. This is also an opportunity for teachers to acknowledge their skills and understanding of the concept. If students can bring their interests to a project and concept that is not easy I feel that they will be able to understand it better. It is designed for all students of any age.

The Neural Network Escape Room should be done after teaching the Neural Network Lesson. The Escape Room is directly related to this lesson and teachers should draw connections between this activity and students' experiences of these lessons.

Rationale

The context for which I designed this modification is for teachers to incorporate culturally responsive teaching strategies. Building relationships with students has always been a focus of my teaching. I feel that if students don’t feel like they are heard and acknowledged they will not want to learn any concept. We need to consider all aspects of teaching the students, not just the academic content. If students feel safe, heard, respected and loved and cared for they will want to participate and be a part of the classroom community. I believe this is what being culturally responsive is about.  I think that it is beneficial to students to do projects like this because they are given an opportunity to see things from a different perspective such as their peers and themselves and that is so important. These extensions allow all teachers to be the facilitator and get to really know their students. With this activity, students are allowed to be creative in their learning by truly showing who they are as people and what is important to them.
