Activity Overview
In this activity, students play a game to simulate the adversarial components of a GANs. One team plays the role of a generator. Another team plays the role of a discriminator.
Total Activity Time: 25 minutes
Materials:
- Generator vs Discriminator Slide Deck
- Generator vs Discriminator - printable board game
- Answer Key for Discriminators - do not show to Generators
- 2nd Answer Key for Discriminators - for a 2nd game
Prep:
- If playing offline, print enough board games 2 player games.
- If playing offline, print the answer key.
- If playing the game online, prepare to share y.
- In either case, one team needs the Discriminator Input Dataset (either shared through a private link or printed).
Options for Differentiation
- Split class into two knowledge heterogeneous groups for the Generator vs. Discriminator activity, such that high- and low-academically achieving students are distributed.
- Give clear directions - Walk through the game directions step-by-step with modeling. Then, provide these written directions to each group for impromptu reference as needed.
- Give multiple examples - Make sure there is a teacher in each group who is prepared to model out to be a discriminator / generator by thinking aloud.
- If a student needs more time, convert the game board into a smaller grid, e.g., 5 x 5, and make-up a new pattern across 4-6 similarly shaped grids for the discriminator to use as an input dataset (e.g., 4-6 slightly different plus ( + ) signs, or 4-6 slightly different squares)
