Activity Overview

This activity asks students to create their own ethical matrices for their best PB&J sandwich algorithms.  It shows that different algorithms can have different purposes for different stakeholders and that such relationships can be visually represented using an ethical matrix.

Total Activity Time:  10 minutes

Materials:

  • Ethical Matrix In-Person Worksheet
  • Ethical Matrix Online Worksheet

Prep:

  • Print the Ethical Matrix In-Person worksheet
  • For groups:  provide chart paper and markers
  • Optional:  Create a student example/model

Options for Differentiation

  • Assign partners or small heterogeneous ability groups of 3-4 for “Ethical Matrix” activity. Note if you used this method of differentiation for Lesson 0.2: Algorithms as Opinions, then you should use the same partners or groups for this lesson.
  • Pull aside a student or a small group of students who benefit from having directions read aloud. Read the directions aloud for these students and walk them through the activity as needed. Aim for maximal independence and minimal frustration.
  • Remind students that, if they finish early, they can continue to work on their “Explore AI Journal”, which students can work on as an ongoing project.
