Activity Overview

This activity builds on the Cat/Dog Classifier Teachable Machine Activity to have students re-curate the data to improve the algorithm.

Total Activity Time:  15 minutes

Materials:

  • Extra Cats and Dogs for Curating Datasets
  • Teachable Machine Activity #3 (printable worksheet)
  • Teachable Machine Activity #3 (Google Form)

Options for Differentiation

  • Assign partners or small heterogeneous ability groups of 3-4 for all three “Teachable Machine” activities. Design groups so they can stay the same throughout all three lessons.
  • Form a small pull-out group to work closely with a teacher as they complete the activity together. This teacher can plan on reading all directions and walking the students each step of all three activities (Make sure this teacher is available for all three lessons).
  • Students with special needs for more content or more time can both benefit from taking extra time to explore each activity. For students who move through content quickly, give them a mini-project of creating an entirely new dataset to make a new classifier. For students who need more time, replace Activity 2 with a mini-project that repeats Activity 1 so they can explore other ways images they create might introduce algorithmic bias (without struggling with uploading image files to the website, which can be an unnecessary barrier).
  • Remind students that, if they finish early, they can continue to work on their “Explore AI Journal”, which students can work on as an ongoing project.
