Activity Overview
This activity allows students to use a simple carbon footprint calculator to determine how much carbon their regular activity releases. That number can be used to compare how much carbon is released by AI.
Total Activity Time: 20 minutes
Materials:
- Host Site for Carbon Footprint Activity
- Activity Landing Page (select Basic or Middle Schoolers option)
- Start the Activity (select “Explore” so your students don’t have to register)
Options for Differentiation
- Assign ability-heterogeneous partners to Turn & Talk to address questions posed during the class discussion.
- Create sentence starters to guide student discussion, prioritize I-statements, and encourage students to draw connections to what other students have already shared.
- “I think… because…
- “Yes, and I think it is also because…”
- “I disagree with, [name], because…”
- Split the class in half. Give one half of students the optional (in this case required) activity of calculating their carbon footprint, then use the slides and script to guide a discussion with a smaller group of students. Assign students with special needs to one of these groups so you can adjust pacing of instruction to support their learning style.
