Overview of Projects
In these capstone projects, students do not use LLMs. Both projects (together and individually) can serve as final, culminating activities for students to synthesize their understanding of LLMs. It consists of two optional parts. Educators may choose to do both, only one, or none.
- Capstone #1: Debate: Students engage in a structured debate, exploring the societal impacts of LLMs across three key areas: creativity, media, and education. This activity encourages critical thinking and the ability to articulate both the potential benefits and drawbacks of LLM technology. Debate topics may include all, some or one of the following topics at the educators discretion:
- LLM impact on human creativity
- LLM impact on news and media
- LLM impact on education and learning
- Capstone #2: Public Service Announcement (PSA): Building on the debate (optional), students create a PSA to inform their school or community about LLMs. The materials / medium of the PSA is up to the educators discretion. The PSA must include:
- An explanation of what LLMs are and how they function.
- Strategies for evaluating LLM output.
- A proposed policy for responsible and ethical LLM use.
This activity allows students to apply their knowledge in a practical way, communicating complex information to a broader audience.
NOTICE: This lesson can be modified for students ≤13 years old and up. Students ≤13 years old should not have access to LLMs
Total Project Time: minimum 45 minutes, but activities can involve more time depending on prioritization of research and practice for the debate and craftsmanship for the PSA
Learning Objectives: These activities are designed to be a culmination of all the learning that has occurred in this unit.
Pacing:
- Debate (45 min, 1 class period): Instruction (10 min), students work in partners to prepare for the debate (min 15 min), debate (min 15 min), closing (5 min)
- PSA (45 min, 1 class period): Instruction (10 min), students work in small groups on their PSA (min 20 min), gallery walk (min 10 min), closing (5 min)
Planning Guide
Preparation Needed: 15-20 minutes
Prep Needed for Introducing the Debate:
- Prepare resources (digital or otherwise) for students to debate any or all of the following topics: 1) LLM impact on human creativity; 2) LLM impact on news and media; 3) LLM impact on education and learning.
Prep Needed for Introducing the Public Service Announcement (PSA):
- Prepare materials for PSA. These might include paper, scissors, and markers, but educators may have capacity for digital media such as digital documents, images, videos, or websites. Educators are encouraged to choose a medium for the PSA that suits the interests and abilities of their students.
